1.0 BACKGROUND
The ‘Menu of Moyle’ initiative is aimed at championing local food producers and eating establishments in the Moyle area and promoting the use of locally grown or produced food. The project is funded by Moyle District Council’s Economic Development Programme.
As part of the ‘Menu of Moyle’ initiative, the local restaurant competition will actively market those restaurants, cafés, coffee shops, pubs and inns who display their commitment to supporting local food producers by entering the competition and including local produce on their menus. Each participating eatery will be challenged to offer a special local menu, containing at least 60% of local produce.
The organisers of the ‘Menu of Moyle’ competition will proactively market each establishment who have produced a dedicated competition menu containing at least 60% of locally sourced ingredients. Marketing will include:
o Regular press releases to the local weekly and regional daily papers, as well as relevant specialist publications.
o A dedicated website where all competitors’ menus will be displayed online and a facility for diners to give feedback on the individual establishments will be available.
o The use of a dedicated logo and supply of window stickers and leaflets identifying the establishment as a ‘Menu of Moyle’ competitor.
The ‘Menu of Moyle’ competition is free to enter and will run in the Moyle area until early September 2009. Entrants will be split into the following categories: Restaurants; Pubs & Inns; and Cafés & Coffee Shops.
Acceptance of the following rules is a condition of entry to the ‘Menu of Moyle’ local eateries competition.
2.1 The ‘Menu of Moyle’ competition is open to all eating establishments operating within the Moyle District Council geographical boundaries, which fall into the competition categories listed.
2.2 To be included in the competition, participants will be required to use at least 60% of locally sourced produce (i.e. produce sourced from within the Moyle area) on their dedicated Menu of Moyle.
2.3 Each establishment will be expected to devise at least one ‘Moyle’ inspired signature dish based on the use of ingredients sourced in the immediate area.
All competing participants’ menus will be expected to include details regarding the source of the local produce used (this may be listed on the reverse side of the ‘Menu of Moyle’).
2.4 All participants will agree to abide by the rules, regulations, terms and conditions of the competition, which may be varied from time to time by the organisers. All entries are made at the participant’s own expense and the organisers will not be liable to reimburse any expense incurred in taking part in the competition.
3.1 The competition will be judged by an independent panel of experts.
3.2 Initially, two establishments in each competition category will be short-listed based upon their use of locally sourced produce, the creativity and originality of their signature dish(es) and their overall ‘Menu of Moyle’.
Establishments will be responsible for providing full menu details together with information about the local producers used, for the judges to assess.
3.3 The short-listed finalists in each category will receive a mystery visit from the panel of judges in order to make their final decision. At this stage, the entire dining experience will be accessed – from service and presentation, to the flavour and quality of food, value for money and cleanliness.
3.4 The competition organisers are not obliged to make any award if it considers it inappropriate to do so. The decisions of the judges are final and binding - no correspondence or discussion concerning any decision will be entered into.
3.5 All award winners will be announced at a special presentation event for all participants in ‘Menu of Moyle’ to be held in September 2009.
4.1 There will be one award made within each of the three categories listed: Restaurants; Pubs & Inns; and Cafés & Coffee Shops.
4.2 The winning establishment in each category will receive a presentation award. This award will state their success in their individual category of the ‘Menu of Moyle 2009’ local eateries competition.
4.3 The description of the awards and selection process is not binding and may be varied by the organisers.
5.3 The organisers reserve the right to seek and issue publicity on behalf of entrants.
